We present the broad topic of explorative tomography. Contrary to the current practice of x-ray tomography, where the reconstructed image is analyzed after the scan has nished, explorative tomography provides real-time visual feedback during the scan, involving the domain-expert who will interpret the data in the scanning process. We discuss the research and implementation challenges involved in this radical redesign
of the x-ray scanning workflow and report recent results from the Computational Imaging group at CWI, Amsterdam on establishing the components needed for an explorative imaging system.
